By Zoé de York

Translated by Joana Cansado Carvalho

Since his election last November, Herman Van Rompuy has had the chance to master his office. After three months in charge, the former Belgian Prime-Minister came to present his work to the members of the Belgian European Movement. The President answered the citizens’ questions with prudence and a sense of humour.

AEGEE celebrates its 25th Anniversary

AEGEE celebrates its 25th AnniversaryAEGEE (Association des États Généraux des Étudiants de l’Europe) one of the largest and most famous youth association in Europe is celebrating today its 25th Anniversary! It was founded on 16 April 1985 in Paris by young Europeans striving for the development of European integration and the creation of a true European nation.

Embracing the integration of Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the European Students’ Forum, as it is also called, initiated European-wide initiatives such as the Erasmus Student Exchanges and played a strategic role in the recognition of non-formal education.

25 years on, the AEGEE is now well established and already focused on its new project “Beyond Europe – Perspectives for Tomorrow’s World”, where young European will focus on the research and understanding of European influence on world affairs.

Meeting Europe as journalist

Text and Photos by Laura Diaz Calvo

For someone who likes media and information a first experience at European Council in the Justus Lipsius building, can be a very interesting experience. I’m not talking about watching all the European Heads of States or Government together and deciding on a last rescue plan to face the crisis, in this case for Greece. No, I’m talking about the journalistic dynamics and about news running in corridors and knowing what will be in all world’s media as we speak.

Flowers instead of Powers. History made in Europe (with Frustration and Compromise)!

by Letizia Gambini

Everything is moving very quick in the European Council's main hall, especially transformed in a huge press room for the occasion of the extra-ordinary Informal Meeting of EU Heads of State, called by the Swedish Presidency to decide upon the nominations for the first ever President of the EU and Chief of EU's foreign policy.

"Europe is all about compromise", says a German journalist, new comer to the European bubble of Brussels-based correspondents "and this cannot bring to anything else than frustration".

Official - Officious, Are Brits and Italians out of the race?

7 p.m. First rumors are spreading like fire

By Pia Menning, Marinka De Rycke and Michael Aurori

Rumors among the press members are getting more concrete.

First rumor is in here at the Council. It says that the British have redraw their support for Tony Blair at the position of President. The European socialists gathered today and decided not to back Blair for the position of President. Rumor says that there is a consensus to appoint Herman Van Rompuy. He will start on January 1st and the discussions are more about the staff he will be appointing and the money he will receive.

There are also some quite concrete rumors about the High Representative for Foreign Affairs. The Italian candidate Massimo D’Alema is apparently out of the game. On the other hand British EU Trade Commissioner Catherine Ashton is regarded as a hot candidate. Her lack of experience is seen by as an advantage by a lot of people, given that the big member states do not prefer a high profile candidate at the post. Further she is a woman and this will answer the calls that where made in the last days for more women at the European top.

Starving in Brussels

An Analysis by Waldo Vanderhaeghen

homeless.jpgThe past months many angry workers voiced their discontent with workers from other European countries ‘stealing’ their jobs. The economic crisis is taking its toll on employment and public opinion. However understandable this opinion is, policy makers should not give in to impulsive reactions. The migrant worker is also a human being, also adds economic value and migrants have become citizens, part of, and contributing to, Europe’s societies. A report from Brussels ‘down-under’, a city flooded with European migrant workers but benefiting the most from them.
