Saturday Museum night fever in Brussels

By Joëlle Verstraeten

museum night fever 2010 1 Music, fashion, dance, student participation characterized the third edition of the Museum Night Fever, which took place on March 6 in Brussels. The main objective of the event is to stimulate cultural participation with young people. Therefore twenty museums opened their doors and let Brussels students made art come to life.

I started my tour in the Jubelparkmuseum. Here, the students of the Haute Ecole Francisco Ferrer had taken over the place. Some guided us you through to the Pre-Columbian American period with their stories, others helped create your own outfit, inspired by the Pre-Columbian American objects of the permanent collection. In the big Narthex-hall a catwalk was build for the event. Encouraged by their classmates, poncho’s and parrots-looking dresses in flashy pink and blue were worn with pride.

museum night fever 2010 2The next stop was the Museum of Elsene where the collection of XJ’ L, an art house for youth in Brussels stood in the spotlight. Through cubism the students tried to experience daily activities differently. A motion picture shows how the poetic vandals of XJ’ L redefined the Brussels metro-life by following a cube. In addition a three dimensional cubic puzzle proves their creativity.

museum night fever 2010 3African notes with a hint of flamenco echoed as we entered the historic tower Hallepoort. Through slam sessions and break-dance moves the youth danced their way into the night. Others were waiting in line as the students of Institute Saint-Marie were silk-screening a self-made design.

Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to visit all the places. And as the clock stroke 1 hour, it was time to hit the Bozar. What better way to end the night with a party. Even though I can’t compare to the previous years, in my eyes the night was a success. Not only the waiting time of the queues, especially to enter the Museum of Music Instruments, but also the mass-filled MIVB buses proved that fact. Besides the museums with music and dance performances or workshops were very popular with the youth. If you ask me, it won’t be the last thing we hear about the museum night fever in Brussels.

Join the initiative for Haiti, tonight in Brussels

Haiti FlyerTonight in Brussels you can take part in a special social event where you will be able to taste special Haitian cocktail and feel the accompaniments of Haitian DJ Kwak. The café Maison du Peuple is hosting an evening of solidarity with Haiti, with photo and video exhibition of the island before the Earthquake.

Cafebabel Brussels has met Marta Alcalde and Ruslan Gogin, initiators of the project.

It is as trainees at the S&D Group in the European Parliamen that Marta, from Spain, and Ruslan, from Estonia, first met. When Haiti got hit by the disaster, they were overwelmed with information about victims, but left however without a clear idea on how regular citizens could help Haitians. Sharing a common interests in helping society, they naturally stood up with with an idea that would give to anyone in Brussels the opportunity to help.

Haiti Solidarity team Marta Alcalde(Spain), Ruslan Gogin(Estonia), Beatriz Talegon(Gen.Secretary of JSE Europe)

Ruslan told us how fast the project took shape: "Once we launched the idea, it quickly developped and soon more and more people joined in. During the whole period of organization of the event, we’ve received a lot of help from different NGO-s and individuals. Ones helped us with contacts; another with publishing, third spread the news, forth helped in distribution. It’s been a great pleasure to work with all of them. And each effort is certainly irreplaceable. We had a great pleasure to cooperate with Solidar, Maison du Peuple, and our socialists friends from S&D Group in the European Parliament, JSE Europa, PES and Solidarite Socialiste."

A lot of people are expected tonight, individuals but also from NGO-s and networks. "People can contribute in many ways", says Marta. "Firstly, donating directly on the place to special boxes and secondly just having a wonderful party!". Each drink bought in the Maison Du Peuple tomorrow will turn into bottle of clean water in Haiti!

What Ruslan and Marta are also very glad about, is that this initiative has contributed to the creation of a strong network of NGO-s and activists who are willing to cooperate to help Haiti, and will continue working in this direction.

They are waiting for you tonight as from 9pm at Maison du Peuple, Parvis Saint-Gilles 39, Metro Porte de Halle.

If you want to support the initiative but can't come to the event, you can make a direct donation to:

EU 2020 Strategy: Raising the Game!

lisbon strategy logoIn 2000, under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council, the EU launched its ambitious 'Lisbon Strategy' to become "the world's most dynamic knowledge-based economy by 2010"...

With the 2010 deadline drawing nearer, the European Commission and national governments have begun to reflect on replacing the Strategy. EU leaders are expected to adopt the revised strategy in March 2010.

Pat Cox, Maria João Rodrigues, John Monks and Philippe de Buck together with the European political parties’ leaders are meeting on March 3 to discuss the economic and social future of Europe in the briefing organised by the European Movement International (EMI).

The event is open to the EU professionals interested by the topic. You know the rest...

A Haitian evening in Brussels, with music and solidarity!

Haiti

What do we know about the Haiti? What did we know about the Haiti? Why do we know about the Haiti? Did you know that life conditions on Haiti before the disaster were below the living standards?

These are the questions raised by a bench of young European Socialists in Brussels who want to help Haiti get back on their feet and see people’s attitude change. For them, it is not about something that happened but about mankind’s consciousness. It’s about people’s attitude to life and other people...

On March 5, they organise in the Cafe Maison du Peuple (Parvis Saint-Gilles 39, Metro Porte de Halle) a special social event which will include photo- and video exhibition (Haiti before the Earthquake), musical band and much more.

During the event you will be able to taste special Haitian cocktail and feel the accompaniments of DJ from Haiti (Dj Kwak)!
